The following message was posted to: dance-tech Hello Dance Tech Members and Fellow participants of the ASU 2001 SWIPT Summer International Seminar: We would like to let you know that Joan Karlen and I have been working these last two years in the production of an interactive multimedia choreographic work, ZOOM IN, LOOK OUT, which has just been premiered at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The work has been developed jointly in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I live and direct the contemporary dance group NUCLEODANZA, and at the University of Wisconsin, where Joan Karlen is professor of dance. It was developed in three intensive experimentation periods in Argentina and in the USA that involved a mixed team of dancers, musicians and programmers from both countries. It will be shown for another three performances this coming week in Wisconsin and the work will then have a one-month season all through October at the COMPLEJO TEATRAL SAN MARTIN, in Buenos Aires. Press Release and Photos; http://www.uwsp.edu/theatre- dance/dance/Performance/Zoom%20Press%20page.htm The technologies experimented with and used in the piece are basically: 3 WIRELESS MICROPHONES within a table that respond to subtle tapping on the table and transmit wireless to a MAX patch of sound files. VNS sensing of movement in space, and also more specifically on the table, through a camera and again MAX mapping and sound files. ISADORA used as live video capture and projected back real time with the delay effect. PHOTOSHOP used in real time on the dancers and by the dancers (with wireless Gyromouse) connected to a MAX program sensitive to mouse position and eliciting sound responses corresponding to the drawing positions. Previously recorded and edited VIDEO material on two projectors. One of the projectors is equipped with a movable mirror system to change the position and angle of the projected image. ORIGINAL MUSICAL OCTOPHONIC COMPOSITION for the complete 44-minute work. The music and or sounds are also incorporated in the videos and in the interactive technologies. The research on the use of the software and hardware and the octophonic musical composition was developed for the most part at the University of Moron (no morons there…) where Jorge Sad is Director of the Institute of Sound and Music Research on Digital Media and Francisco Colasanto Technical Director, and sound and interactive technologies expert. Even though the subject matter of the piece has been delineated around a fictional female character and a cameraman-dancer that plays the role of an outsider who enters her territory, the work takes into account the fact that the piece was created in both countries, in the middle of some very disturbing worlds events (the Argentine overthrow of a president followed by very unusual, violent and almost musically coordinated massive street manifestations, September 11, and the Iraq war). The going back and forth of the artistic team has given the work a particular flavor, a sound, image and content contrast related to the idiosyncrasies of these two different environments. I am quite conscious of the ongoing and perennial debate, as to what the technology can really add to the content and development of a choreographic stage work. I have tried not to get entangled in the many plugs and cables, and have made an effort to use the interactive tools only in those moments where I felt they could really enhance and add to the dramatic content of the scene where they are involved. We will be adding some photographs to the Web page we are making for ZOOM IN LOOK OUT which will be ready in 2 more days.
