Dr Sarah Rubidge, a pioneer in the integration of performance and
digital media, is seeking a part-time (0.5) Research Assistant for
her practical research in interactive installations. The successful
candidate will be familiar with AppleMac OS, have programming skills
and/or be highly skilled users of interactive programmes such as Max,
Director, etc.

The School of Visual and Performing Arts at UCC has been actively
exploring the opportunities offered by a dialogue between performance
and new technology since 1996. Dr Rubidge's appointment as a Research
Fellow in 2000 has resulted in advances in that exploration at all
levels (from undergraduate through to postdoctoral research). SVPA
runs several modules which actively encourage collaboration across
artistic disciplines and a dialogue between Performance and
Technology.. SVPA is developing a specialist public performance
programme which emphasises work which explores the dialogue between
performance practices and new technologies. The School has two
well-equipped theatre spaces, two specialist theatre technicians in
lighting and music, and makes extensive use of other spaces for
installation work. A specialist Research Assistant, with skills in
new technologies and an interest in interactive performance and
installation work, is needed to enable the SVPA to both advance and
sustain its current research programmes
The Research Assistant position will entail:
* assisting Dr Rubidge on the development of interactive systems and
interfaces for large-scale multi-
user installations
* contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate Performance and
Technology courses
* assisting undergraduate and postgraduate students on practical
research projects which use new
technologies
There will be ample opportunity for the successful candidate to
develop their own work in the field. Appropriately qualified
candidates will have the opportunity to undertake postgraduate
research leading to MPhil/PhD and/or postdoctoral research.

The School of Visual and Performing Arts provides undergraduate and
postgraduate programmes Dance, Fine Art, Music and Performing Arts.
It has an active research culture which includes programmes of
regular research presentations by staff, postgraduate students and
visiting artists and annual research conferences. There is a focus on
practice based arts research reflected in the recently established MA
programme in Collaborative Arts which includes MAs in Dance, Fine Art
and Music. Staff, most of whose research is of national and
international standing, are actively engaged in work in areas such
as: performance and new technologies, arts therapies,
poststructuralism and performance analysis, multi-media theatre and
surround sound, dance criticism, choreography, dance film making,
textiles, mixed media, sculpture, digital animation, opera, music
aesthetics, composition, performance and popular music technology.
There is an increasing community of research students particularly in
the dance area working on projects focussing on gender and dance,
psycho-physical experiences of space and dance, quantum practice and
contemporary performance theory, cultural identity and dance and
dance improvisation and phenomenology. Visiting Research fellows are
the international performance director Johannes Birringer and the
choreographer and director Lea Anderson. The School is well-networked
with various national and international arts research organisations
such as the European League of Institutes of the Arts, the
International Federation for Theatre Research, the Society of Dance
History Scholars, the Society of Dance Research and the Music in the
Psyche Network.
