Position Search Announcement DANCE AND TECHNOLOGY FACULTY POSITION AVAILABLE BEGINNING OCTOBER 1, 2004 THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, COLLEGE OF THE ARTS Position: Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor, Tenure Track in Department of Dance, with specialty in dance and technology. Qualifications: Graduate degree preferred, or equivalent professional experience. Demonstrated expertise and teaching experience in current and emerging technologies. Strong body of research related to dance and technology desired. Demonstrated collaborative skills and administrative capabilities. Responsibilities: TEACHING: Teach a variety of technologically based courses in the Department of Dance, and integrate use of technology into studio and theory centered tracks. Advise undergraduate and graduate student independent projects, as well as MA and MFA projects and theses. Potential for teaching courses in conjunction with programs at the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD), and for developing team-teaching initiatives within the College of the Arts. RESEARCH: Conduct research and participate in creative activity in the area of dance and technology. Current faculty areas of research and teaching include video, performance and media, telematics, interactive stage presence, motion capture, and dance documentation. SERVICE: Active participation required in student advising, department administrative duties, and committee service within the department, college and university. Department of Dance Program: The Department of Dance is consistently ranked in the top 5 undergraduate and graduate programs in the U.S. Due to the department's strong emphasis on teaching, it received the University's first Departmental Teaching Excellence Award. The department offers the BFA, MA and MFA degrees, pre K-12 Teacher Licensure, as well as a Dance Minor and elective program for non-majors. The Department is currently formulating a PhD. While the department has a modern dance emphasis, course work provides students with a broad vision of the field of dance. The resident faculty, drawn from the professional dance world, encourages the highest standards whether in performance, choreography, education, or scholarship. In addition to modern, ballet, and African based techniques, course work includes choreography, repertory, Labanotation and Laban studies, dance history, production and lighting, dance pedagogy, and dance related technologies. The department is an acknowledged international leader in the field of dance media technologies and is firmly committed to advancing these research and teaching initiatives throughout the curriculum and into the field of dance. (see http://www.dance.ohio-state.edu/) The Department is staffed by 16 FTE resident faculty, adjuncts and 14 graduate associates The department also supplements curricular offerings with ongoing master classes and guest artists throughout the year. It supports an enrollment of approximately 100 undergraduate majors, and 30 graduate students, and 400 non-major elective students each quarter. The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) is an interdisciplinary research and development center that provides emerging technology resources for the College of the Arts, the College of Engineering and other related programs at The Ohio State University. Since its inception in 1987, ACCAD has become an internationally recognized center for teaching and research. ACCAD forms partnerships with visual and performing artists, designers, art historians and critics, computer scientists, engineers and architects. It promotes the study of an aesthetic message design that can have an impact upon such diverse areas as computer software development, film and special effects production, advertising and television promotion, the visual and performing arts and scientific computing and visualization. The focus of research and academic activities at ACCAD is on computer animation, real-time virtual environments, multimedia and motion analysis rooted in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.
