Re: dance review, choerography, research

hello all:

I thought it is such a rare occasion that it
needs to be mentioned and acknowledged here,
namely that a dance critic --- Sanjoy Roy in the
late summer issue of "Contemporary" (London) ---
enters into an insightful and close discussion of
the work and then refers to research underlying
the piece: in this case, Wayne Mc Gregor
(Random Dance Co.) and the new "AtaXia",
connected to "Choreography & Cognition," a
research-collaboration organised by Scott
deLahunta. All of this gets mentioned in the
review, and interpretive relations are set up
between the research undertaking and the
compositional and presentational aspects of the
dance, its design and expressions, its
hypermusical energy (the score is by Michael
Gordon who also wrote, if I am not mistaken, the
energizing/enervating music for the film
"Decasia"). The review also includes a reference
to the research website (!),
<http://www.choreocog.net>
http://www.choreocog.net.

I think I had asked for responses to AtaXia
earlier here on this list, when we had the long
and involved debate in June on e-MERGE
(Performance-Lecture-Demonstration: A creative
investigation into emergence theory), and on
dance - science collaborations and convergences.
For many of us, issues of collaboration come up
frequently, in the pre-production and production
processes, but also, I anticipate, they will come
up with full force for those practitioners in our
schools who might be involved in a getting a
research degree (in the UK now called PAR,
practice-as-research or practice-based Phd
degrees) in new media-dance or performance;

regarding the distributed research development of
AtaXia, I would of course be interested to learn
more about it, since it is mentioned, on Random's
website
[<http://www.randomdance.org/>http://www.randomdance.org/]
, that AtaXia's exploration of "loss of control"
was done by "drawing on a new team of expertly
attuned associates from the diverse worlds of
neuroscience, composition, psychology, design,
and computer programming... AtaXia challenges the
very fabric of collaboration. Its a creative
friction that confounds expectation."

Okay, enough confounding, can we hear some
feedback on this particular work, or comments
from those who were involved?

with regards
